Outcomes provided evidence that contrast effects are present in the evaluation of communication and interpersonal skills scores on the USMLE Step 2 CS Examination. The effect was found to build (within a session) and sustain over time (across sessions). Results suggest that modifications may be appropriate in the current test delivery procedures, such as controlling scheduling to equalize examinee characteristics, revising the score scale, and improving rater training.Spear found that even one or two preceding work samples, unlike a block of five essays used in earlier studies (Hales and Tokar, 1975; ...
